SentinelOne, Insight Partners Invest In Public Cloud Security Startup Laminar

Laminar Security, a public cloud data protection provider, has raised $32 million in Series A funding led by Insight Partners, with participation from SentinelOne, TLV Partners and Meron Capital.

Funding from SentinelOne and Insight Partners should catch the attention of MSPs and MSSPs. After all, SentinelOne's endpoint detection and response (EDR) software has caught on with MSPs. And Insight Partners frequently invests in MSP-friendly technology startups.

Laminar Security: Targeting CISOs, Data Protection Teams... And MSSPs?

So, is Laminar Security building its platform for MSPs and MSSPs? Laminar didn't specifically mention those partner types in the funding announcement. Instead, the company said its software is "built specifically for CISOs and data protection teams," and allows those users to:

  • Discover and Classify sensitive data continuously for complete visibility.
  • Secure and Control to improve risk posture.
  • Detect and Remediate leaks without interrupting data flow.

The overall goal: Provide "full data observability across your entire public cloud." As a result, data protection teams will be able to "reduce the attack surface, detect real-time data leaks and get back in control of their data," Laminar Security indicated.

Still, it's a bit too early to test Laminar's product claims. The company indicated that the software is on track to debut in 2022. In the meantime, it sounds like company founders Amit Shaked (CEO) and Oran Avraham (CTO) have deep expertise in cloud security. Both are Unit 8200 veterans, four-time Google Capture the Flag champions. They're also life-long friends.

MSSPs Embrace Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM)

In some ways, Laminar sounds like it's addressing the hot market for cloud security posture management (CSPM) software.

CSPM tools allow MSSPs and end-customers to monitor and properly configure Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform and other public cloud workloads.

Fully 41 percent of our Top 250 MSSP survey participants now offer cloud security posture management (CSPM) to their end customers, MSSP Alert research found in September 2021.
